“Nature helps to heal our bodies and our minds”, this was said by the Environment Officer Ms ‘Maferete Moorosi.

She said this while reminding the staff about the annual commemoration of World Environment Day, a campaign led by the United Environment Programme. She indicated that the day is celebrated annually on the 05th of June and that it is a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues as the principal vehicle to encourage action for protection towards the environment.

Under the theme #TogetherWecanBeatPlasticPollution# it focuses on ending plastic pollution which has seeped into every corner of the world over decades. Plastic pollution permeates every corner of the world, even in the bodies as micro plastics, and it calls for collective action to tackle plastic pollution.

Ms Moorosi further said the observance plays a central role in encouraging efforts toward building a more sustainable and cleaner future. Everybody alive now, is part of a generation that is the first to witness the devastating effects of environmental degradation and the last to take measures to counter it and be on track to achieving global goals on climate and biodiversity thus the world can be a generation that finally makes peace with land.

Environment day started to be celebrated in 1973 and has grown to be part of the largest global platform for environmental protection. It is a key event to promote environmental protection as it brings together governments, civil society, communities and individuals to action on issues such as climate change, pollution and others. Let us all engage in activities that will eliminate or minimize plastic usage.
