LEC commemorates Earth Hour!
The Lesotho Electricity Company joins the world in its celebratory act to observe the “Earth hour”, in style.
The last Friday of March in every year, has globally been dubbed the day under which “Earth Hour” is celebrated from 20:30hrs to 21:30hrs aimed at observing power usage and reduction. The Lesotho Electricity Company, together with the Ministry of Forestry and Environment participated in an activity of planting trees at Ha-Matšaba village in Mafeteng. According to the LEC Environment Officer, Ms. Maferete Moorosi this year’s theme “Our power, our planet” emphasizes the crucial role of renewable energy in creating a sustainable future. She said that during global events, individuals and businesses are encouraged to switch off the lights and non-essential appliances for just an hour, in raising awareness about energy use, consumption and environmental impact.
Ms Moorosi highlighted that this year’s focus is on promoting cleaner energy solutions for homes, businesses and transportation by reassuring a transition away from the fossil fuels. “Spend just 60 minutes doing something good or positive for the planet Earth”
Speaking at the same occasion, on behalf of the Ministry of Forestry and Environment in the Mafeteng district Ms. Motekoa Ramalitse, indicated that under the international mandate to reduce global warming and minimize severe climate changes in the atmosphere, planting of trees play an important role in curbing the crippling severity of damage on the ozone layer. She highlighted that natural causes that include ferocious windblows, thunderstorms and many others usually lead to continual network collapses, causing power outages that hinder progress of the day-to-day operations affecting individuals and businesses.
In recognition of a monument appreciation of the nation’s founding of 200 years, 200 trees were planted, a significant move to protect the environment, also showing the importance of energy preservation in every way possible, she further said.
This year’s commemoration was on March 22, and LEC observed it on 11 April 2025.
